Pulama I Ke Ola Conference
Theme: Valuing Our Future and Our Past
E Komo Mai - Welcome!
Life is precious. This conference hopes to remind participants' that life IS precious and healthcare providers have a very special duty to provide the best care possible to those under their care.
Unique format. This conference combines a professional and a youth program with information on current research and clinical practices integrating holistic health concepts to improve health care. Special attention is placed on health issues of children (keiki) and seniors (kupuna) within Hawaii's multi-cultural milieu
Professional Program: The Professional Program is established to provide health practitioners with updates on current issues and trends affecting health care and to facilitate satisfaction of continuing education to meet credentialing requirements. (This activity has been approved by the Hawaii Nurses Association Continuing Education Committee, appointed by the Hawaii Nurses Association Board of Directors as approvers of continuing education in nursing.)
Youth Program: The Youth Program is established to expose students to current healthcare issues and to provide them an opportunity to interact with healthcare clinicians on an informal basis. Programming will incorporate teaching methods appropriate to the student population so that they can gain meaningful experience.

Youth Program:
Our second annual Pulama I Ke Ola (Hold Life Precious) Conference for Youth is scheduled for May 19 and 20, 2005. This conference will be held on the UH Hilo campus. The theme this year is: Valuing Our Future and our Past. This theme has us focusing on the special health needs of the elderly and of children. It is exciting to provide high school students with an opportunity to listen to speakers talk about health issues and have students hear talks given by health care providers about their careers. A special lunch will be arranged with students able to informally chat with invited healthcare professionals. Multiple hands-on sessions are planned along with other meaningful exercises. An information flyer and tentative program will be forthcoming soon.As an added feature to the conference, there is an art contest and an essay contest that is open to all high school students, not only the attendees. The contests will revolve around the theme of respect and concern for the elderly and for kids. Desciptions of each of these contests along with contest rules are enclosed. First place cash prizes of $100 will be awarded to contest winners. Second and third place prizes of $50 and $25 will also be awarded.
The conference fee is $75 for both days or $40 for one day. Students who apply for the two-day conference will be eligible for tuition waivers of $40. The balance of the tuition will be the responsibility of the school or the student. For those schools that participate in career pathways program, funds may be available for this activity. Other schools are encouraged to seek funds from alternative sources to assist the students. There is limited seating, so register early.
